Week four: Day one

Today in class we had a presentation that went over next years modules for semester one.
Following this was a presentation about grids, which we need to consider when making our website and flyer.

In class we had a discussion with Tim who gave use some very useful feedback, which can be found on the workbook blog

We did a lot of brainstorming and ideation of work we need to try out and complete during the rest of the week.

Week Three: Day Two

Today in class we begun in the pitt for a presentation on the previous years work to give us an idea of whats in store.

Following this we headed back to class to complete some journey maps, where we sorted out where each of our elements sat (poster, flyer, website) in terms of if they were before, during or after the event. Also what the experience we wanted, including the what the audience will do, feel and think at each stage.

We then gained further feedback from the lecturers, where we spoke about our current concepts and where we were heading with them and also talked a little about the open format section of the brief and what we could do for this. The feedback that we gained from the teachers was the following:

He like the whole food idea and aesthetic, the way in which we presented it right now reminded him of quite fine dining. He liked that the concept still evoked the beach clean up without being too literal and being really beachy and obvious. He also mentioned that Karma was a bit harsh to use, because the message in the image is harsh enough. So we came up with 'dig in' instead. He mentioned that we should really play on this food idea, looking at menus etc like we were delivering a food experience.

Based on this feedback and the feedback we got yesterday in the intrim we are going to go ahead with a concept which is a mash up of the lecturer and classmates feedback, where we are going to take a kiwi dish, like fish and chips, and make it a little more fine dining, changing the tagline to dig in.

Lastly, we finished in the pit for a quick tutorial on how to use invision for our website prototyping.

Week Three: Day one

Today in class we had our interim presentation where we presented our posters to a small group. The other pairs gave us some valuable feedback which was:

food posters:

  • create more of a beach scene
  • make more kiwi
  • more beach foods
doodle poster:

  • create a second layer with real fish?
  • play with thickness of line work

We then went through and answered the interim presentation questions, and displayed our work to the whole class to gain further feedback. We finished with a presentation in the pitt

Week Two: Day Two

In class today we shared our homework task with another group and gained some feedback which was:

  • Henry said that he wouldn't stop and read the text
  • Also that it was quite plain and non-beachy so you don't really get a fun beachy vibe
  • Could be a bit to much with all the type and infographics, could look at a way of making it scientific but still bright and more eye-catching.
  • Also the grey in the bar graph is very similar to the background colour.

After this we shared the best posters with the other class where we were able to have a look at their ideas and give each other feedback. It was interesting to see how different people were approaching things differently and there were some useful comments made by the teachers and students. e.g including branding on objects such as cups is unnecessary, try cropping, the meaning behind the poster can change through style etc.

Questions to think about when creating poster concepts:

  • what is your gut reaction?
  • did you get it? is something confusing?
  • can u see the topic?
  • what is the essential idea?
  • can you distill this to one word/sentence?
  • are there other ways to express this theme?
  • what have we identified as being important at the beach day clean up?

Week Two: Day One

Today during class we first had a discussion with the lecturer about our mood boards, where we set them out and looked at the overall themes and tangibles that were coming across in them. We gained a bit of feedback too, where the lecturer mentions not to refine and tie into one audience to much this early in the design process. However, overall he was happy with the result of our mood boards.

Following this we got into our topic groups to then create a word brainstorm to do with our topic. This including Subjects, Audiences, Tangibles, Theme/Symbols and Styles, where we jotted down the first things that came to mind in terms of Beach clean up.

The next task involved picking out one to two words from each of the columns, mash them together and then to create one idea/concept that could be used for a beach clean up event. We had to do three different treatments, where we had 30 minutes, 10 minutes each. the ideas had to be quite resolved, so that our pairs could easily understand what we are portraying.

Week One - Day Two

In class we shared our ideas we came up with for homework (the Simpsons exercise) to the group who was focusing on the same cause, for us we presented to the 'Clean up our coastline' as that is what we chose to do our project on.

We were then given the project plan which we worked on for the remainder of the class:

Week One - Day One

We were introduced to the brief and told the two different options we could explore: 'Clean up our coastlines or 'Know your neighbours get together' in the Pitt.

In class we got into groups for the Simpsons exercise, each group was given a character which they had to come up with ideas to promote one of the causes to. My group got given Comic Book Guy and 'Clean up out coastlines'. We found that Comic Book guy would have no interest in attending an event like this so we came up with a few more ideas, our best ideas were having a cosplay event at the beach where you'd dress up and the aim of the game would be to pick up as much rubbish as possible with obstacles in the way etc. a superhero dress up day at the beach-everyone cleaning up the beach would dress up in their favourite costumes, or a superhero meet and greet- where you could meet superhero's after picking up rubbish at the beach.

We got put into pairs following this activity.
